How to Choose Shoes for Plantar Fasciitis (and Which to Avoid)
Footwear won't cure plantar fasciitis by itself — but the wrong shoes will sabotage everything else you do. Here's a practical checklist.
What to look for
- Firm heel counter. Squeeze the back of the shoe: it should resist. A stable heel keeps your foot from rolling inward and straining the fascia.
- Torsional stiffness. Try to wring the shoe like a towel. It should twist only slightly. Shoes that fold in half offer your arch nothing.
- A slight heel-to-toe drop (8–12mm). A modest heel raise takes tension off the calf and fascia while you recover. Avoid switching to zero-drop or minimalist shoes mid-flare.
- Removable factory insole. The thin foam liner in most shoes provides near-zero support — but if it's removable, you can replace it with a real anatomical insole like the Muna Relief Insole. That single swap upgrades almost any shoe into a plantar fasciitis shoe.
- Cushioned midsole in good condition. Foam wears out. Running shoes lose meaningful cushioning after roughly 300–500 miles; everyday shoes after about a year of daily wear.
Shoes to avoid during recovery
- Completely flat shoes: ballet flats, flip-flops, most slip-on canvas sneakers
- Worn-out shoes with compressed, lopsided soles
- High heels for long days (they shorten the calf and overload the forefoot and heel on the way down)
- Going barefoot on hard floors — especially for those painful first morning steps
The shoe + insole system
Think of it as a system: the shoe provides the stable chassis, the insole provides the anatomical support. Muna's insoles are sized to your foot (men's 4–14) and slide into running shoes, walking shoes, golf shoes, and lifestyle sneakers — so every pair you own becomes part of the treatment, not part of the problem.
